Hi, I’m Lauren.
My maternal grandmother, Lourdes called the fridge clean out night Sambumbia. Spanish slang for a hodgepodge or concoction. Sambumbia represents everything I love about cooking: using imagination to create something tasty, doing the best with what you’ve got, and finding joy in the simple things in life.
As one of three girls, my mother always had the challenge of feeding me, my sisters, and all of the hungry friends we brought home. Amongst our engagements and commitments, not to mention during her own, my mother would find fun ways to keep us fed. “Sambumbia” night was one such routine. Sambumbia was a fridge cleaning; it was a meal of all the delicious leftovers accumulated through the week, or a creative reimagining of random ingredients found on the back of fridge shelves. In short, a buffet. An array. A smorgasbord.
Serving Up Sambumbia is a place where I can share things I love with the world. Here you’ll find delicious food, approachable recipes, cooking tips, questionable music taste, strong drink, jokes at the expense of my husband, self-deprecation and other sambumbia. I hope you follow along and enjoy.
My Kitchen
I live on Cape Cod with my husband, Bobby, and my dog, Hugo. My kitchen is a combination of chaos and comfort, spurred by a passion for food and drink. We enjoy simple meals and bold flavors. I spice my dishes accordingly. Relying on the cookery instincts of my Cuban and Italian heritage, I try to take inspiration from different areas of the culinary world - reading recipes and making them my own. I hope that you’ll spend some time with me, and my boys, and laugh a bit, maybe learn something new, and create something tasty.
Bobby
My husband and sous chef. He writes, he retains random pieces of knowledge, and he complains. But I love him. He’s responsible for mis-en-place and cooking certain proteins, while holding dominion over the grill. He’s also writing this bio, so make sure to take it with a grain of salt.
Hugo
Hugo, Hugo Bossy Pants - or, when he’s really naughty - Hugo Francis is our Labrador-Rhodesian Ridgeback Mississippi mutt who certainly believes he’s people. If he’s not napping or neighborhood watching, Hugo’s most likely wondering what Mama might have for snacks. All foods from the SuS kitchen are, officially, Hugo approved.
